FOOD SUPPORT CAN HELP YOU MOVE FORWARD.

“Food stamps” are now called SNAP Food Benefits. SNAP helps eligible Texas households buy groceries, and approved benefits are loaded onto a Lone Star Card.

WHO SHOULD APPLY

Eligibility depends on household size, income, resources, expenses, citizenship or eligible immigration status, and other program rules. A criminal record or parole status does not automatically tell you whether you qualify. Answer every question truthfully and let Texas Health and Human Services make the decision.

Do not count yourself out. Income limits and deductions can change, and housing, utility, child-support, medical, and dependent-care expenses may matter.

YOUR SNAP HOUSEHOLD AT STORCH’S PORCHES

For SNAP, “household” generally means the people who live together and buy and prepare food together. It does not automatically mean every resident at the same address.

Storch’s Porches does not provide meals. If you buy and prepare your food separately from other residents, explain that clearly on the application and during the interview. Texas HHSC will decide who must be included.

HOW TO APPLY

  1. Apply online: Visit YourTexasBenefits.com. Create an account so you can save the application, upload proof, and check the status, or choose to apply without an account.

  2. Choose SNAP Food Benefits: Enter your current address, mailing address, household details, income, expenses, and other requested information.

  3. Submit promptly: Do not wait until every document is perfect. Submit the application, then provide requested proof by the deadline.

  4. Complete the interview: Texas HHSC may call or schedule an interview. Watch your phone, voicemail, mail, and online account. Return calls and requested documents quickly.

  5. Read the decision notice: If approved, benefits are placed on a Lone Star Card. If denied and you believe the decision is wrong, the notice explains review or appeal rights.

WHAT TO GATHER

  • Photo ID and proof of your Texas address

  • Social Security number and birth date for each person applying

  • Citizenship or immigration documents for applicants, if applicable

  • Recent pay stubs, employer statements, benefit letters, or a clear explanation of zero income

  • Rent and utility costs

  • Bank account or vehicle information if requested

  • Child support, dependent-care, or qualifying medical expenses, if applicable

WORK RULES

Some adults must meet work, job-search, volunteer, or approved-training rules to keep SNAP. Exemptions may apply because of disability, health limitations, caregiving, age, or other circumstances. Tell HHSC about anything that limits your ability to work and ask which rule applies to you.

Keep copies of job schedules, pay stubs, training records, volunteer hours, medical statements, and notices you send or receive.

IF FOOD IS NEEDED NOW

Call 2-1-1 for nearby food pantries and meal programs while the application is being reviewed. Tell HHSC if your household has very little money or food; some applications may qualify for faster processing.
