AUSTIN FAIR CHANCE HIRING
Austin’s Fair Chance Hiring Ordinance generally delays criminal-history inquiries for covered private employers until after a conditional job offer. It does not erase a record or require an employer to hire every applicant, but it gives qualified people a chance to be considered first for their experience and ability. Read the City of Austin guidance.
BEFORE ACCEPTING A JOB
Confirm the worksite, schedule, pay, start date, identification requirements, dress code, and transportation plan.
Check the schedule against curfew, meetings, testing, and parole reporting.
Confirm eligibility before accepting work involving driving, travel, tools, entry into homes, work near children, or access to controlled substances.
Keep copies of the offer letter, schedule, supervisor contact information, and pay records.
KEEP THE EXPLANATION BRIEF AND HONEST
“I made a serious mistake, and I take responsibility for it. Since then, I have completed my requirements, built a stable plan, and stayed focused on moving forward. I am ready to show up consistently, learn the job, and be accountable.”
A steady place makes the next step possible.
